Forty-eight hours: holding a Web3 platform steady through a regulatory notice

A crisis programme that prioritised the regulator, staff and counterparties over the press cycle, and kept the company in control of its own timeline.

Challenge

A regulatory notice arrived on a Thursday evening. Within two hours it was circulating on social channels, in a category where the default public assumption is guilt.

The company had a communications plan for launches and none at all for this.

Strategy

We sequenced audiences rather than treating it as a press problem. Counterparties and staff heard first and directly, the regulator’s process was respected without public argument, and the press received an accurate holding position rather than a defence.

The governing principle was simple: never say anything in the first week that has to be withdrawn in the third.

Execution

A holding statement was live within four hours, correcting two specific factual errors already circulating and declining to comment on anything under review. Staff and partner briefings ran in parallel on the same facts.

We then went quiet deliberately, and returned only when the review concluded, with the outcome documented.

Results

Coverage stayed factual and short-lived. No correction was ever required, no counterparty exited during the review period, and the resolution was covered by the same outlets that had reported the notice.

The advice we valued most was the advice to say less. Every instinct in the room was to fight it in public.
