A Series B that led the technology pages instead of the funding roundup

Positioning a Mumbai lending platform around the credit problem it solved, not the money it raised, earned standalone features rather than a line in a funding column.

Challenge

Indian funding announcements are a commodity. On any given week a Series B of this size would earn two paragraphs in a roundup, a social post, and nothing else. The company wanted the raise to establish it as the category leader in small-business credit, which a funding story alone will never do.

Strategy

We treated the raise as a deadline rather than as the story. The story was the credit gap the company had spent three years measuring, and the proprietary data it had accumulated about how small businesses in tier-two cities actually borrow.

The funding became the news hook that justified publishing the data.

Execution

We built a research note from the company’s own lending data, put it through an external review for methodology, and offered it under embargo to a small number of business and technology desks a fortnight ahead of the announcement.

Two desks were given exclusive angles on different cuts of the data. The rest received the full package on the day.

Results

The raise was covered as a market story about small-business credit, with the funding as supporting detail. Several pieces ran the company’s data as the headline finding.

The research note has since been cited in coverage the company had no involvement in, which is the outcome worth having.
